Pro-lifers use Mother’s Day to mark sad anniversary of legalized abortion in Mexico City

“The right to choose is a lie”

A group of men and women from Mexico’s Comité Pro-Vida (Pro-Life Committee) celebrated Mother’s Day this year with a prayer vigil for the more than 8,000 mothers who were victims of abortion during the first year that a law legalizing unrestricted abortion in the Mexican capital took effect on April 24, 2007.

About 50 people, mainly women, gathered at the Zócalo, Mexico City’s central plaza, at daybreak on May 10 – the day Mother’s Day is celebrated in Mexico -- and placed 8,000 white balloons, labeled “I’m a mother victim of abortion,” as well as 46 huge red balloons with the name of each one of the legislators who approved the law legalizing abortion.

Led by Jorge Serrano Limón, founder of Pro-Vida Mexico, the participants prayed a rosary for the victimized mothers and also for the pro-abortion legislators.

“The right to choose is a lie, which hurts women and intimately offends our mother, the Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe,” said Rocío Gálvez, the current president of Pro-Life Mexico. “On this Mothers’ Day we should reflect about this homicidal act.”

A huge image of Our Lady of Guadalupe was placed in the middle of the Zócalo, and several testimonies of women who had aborted and later suffered severe depression and suicidal impulses were publicly read.
