IVF as Science Fiction
By Judie Brown

The mentality that having a child is a project or an achievement is becoming more prevalent in our society. Gone seem to be the days where babies are seen as a blessing from God----no matter the gender, the eye color, or the level of ability they can attain. The Senate may vote on the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) this week, a measure that has had pro-life advocates concerned for months. The U.S. already enacted the strongest piece of disabilities legislation in the world but international activists are pushing the measure anyway. Tony Perkins, the head of the Family Research Council, has previously noted the pro-life concerns, saying abortion advocates put language in the treaty in Article 25 that requires signatories to "provide persons with disabilities . . . free or affordable health care including in the area of sexual and reproductive health and population-based health programs."

While pro-life activists have welcomed a CDC study reporting that the abortion rate dropped 5% in 2009, they have also highlighted a more disturbing statistic that has received little to no media coverage. According to the CDC study, 12 women died from complications related to legal abortion in 2008----double the number of the previous year. 2008 is the most recent year for which figures about abortion-related deaths are available. Instances of possible abortion-related deaths that occurred between 2009 and 2012 are currently "under investigation" says the CDC.

Growing into a fully formed human being is a long process, and scientists have found that unborn babies not only hiccup, swallow and stretch in the womb, they yawn too. Researchers who studied 4D scans of 15 healthy fetuses also said they think yawning is a developmental process which could potentially give doctors a new way to check on a baby's health.

See 4D ultrasound images, including preborn babies yawning, in American Life League's DVD production Baby Steps here.
