The silent repeat of eugenic history
By Kurt Kondrich

[Recently] I read a very disturbing article titled "New Prenatal Test Is Bringing Eugenics Back to Germany," and I could not help but think of the famous quote from American philosopher George Santayana: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." [In September] a new prenatal blood test for Down syndrome created by biotech business LifeCodexx was launched in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Lichtenstein, and it very possibly may lead to the repeat of mainstream eugenics in German-speaking Europe. The new prenatal test is "targeted exclusively toward women in their 12th week of pregnancy and beyond who are at an increased risk" of having a child born with Down syndrome, and the reality of this test is that it places unborn children with Down syndrome at a higher risk of abortion. "In the near future, the PrenaTest will also be able to identify other chromosomal mutations such as trisomy 13 and 18," said Dr. Michael Lutz, CEO of LifeCodexx, and the goal seems to be a society free of perceived culturally mandated imperfections. Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, Archbishop of Vienna, very strongly criticized the test by stating: "The issue here is artificial selection or eugenics, pure and simple. Is the infernal term 'life unworthy of life' going to become reality again?"

A growing number of American women are turning to intrauterine devices (IUDs), reports Lawrence Finer of the Guttmacher Institute. Of all American women using birth control, some 7.5 percent had IUDs implanted by 2009. These numbers were double what they had been a few short years before. Finer refers to IUDs, including Mirena, as "contraceptive devices," but IUDs act by aborting already conceived children, not by preventing their conception. An IUD is, in effect, a tiny abortion machine that prevents pregnancy by physically obstructing the normal process by which a tiny baby implants in the uterus of its mother. [And] the list of unwanted side effects of Mirena is quite long.

A federal court on Monday rejected a legal challenge from the largest corporation so far to sue the Obama administration over a mandate requiring most businesses to offer contraceptives and possible abortion-inducing drugs under their insurance plans. Hobby Lobby, the popular arts and crafts store, sued the government on September 12, and asked the court for relief from the mandate as the case proceeds. The Christian-owned-and operated store is the largest and the first non-Catholic-owned businesses to file a lawsuit against the Health and Human Services (HHS) mandate.

Children of God for Life

Children of God for Life, [an American Life League Associate group], announced today that a new flu vaccine, Flucelvax produced by Novartis uses a morally produced mammal-based cell line rather than chick embryo. The proprietary cell line called MDCK (Madin Darby Canine Kidney) has been used for decades in vaccine production and offers a moral alternative to aborted fetal cell line flu vaccines that are currently under development by competing manufacturers. "We are extremely pleased to see Novartis advance in the market over those such as Sanofi Pasteur who are developing influenza vaccines using aborted fetal cell lines," said Children of God for Life Executive Director Debi Vinnedge. "Novartis built its new facility in Holly Springs NC focusing on a moral cell line and they are to be commended for listening to public concerns."
