Pro-Lifers Stage Defense of Unborn Children
 at Three Abortion Clinics
in Acts of Civil Disobedience
during Second Red Rose Rescue

Saturday, Dec 2, 2017.  This morning, in three different cities, pro-lifers entered the waiting rooms of abortion centers to talk to women scheduled for abortions, and by refusing to leave the clinics when told to do so by law enforcement, offered an act of non-violent defense of unborn children about to be aborted, resulting in the pro-lifers’ arrests.
The Red Rose Rescues took place at the Capital Women's Services 6323 Georgia Ave NW Suite 210, Washington, DC, the Alexandria Women’s Health Clinic 101 S Whiting St, Alexandria, VA, and the Women’s Center Clinic 6765 Orchard Lake Rd, West Bloomfield Township, MI
Capital Women’s Services owner Stephen Brigham has been fraught with scandals and legal difficulties over his abortion practice—most notably operating his clinic without a license in which a complaint was filed a month ago with the State of Maryland Medical Board.
Some of those involved in the rescues are 24 year-old DC resident Lauren Handy of Mercy Mission, Fr. Stephen Imbarrato of Priests for Life, nationally known pro-life leader and university professor Monica Migliorino Miller director of Citizens for a Pro-Life Society, Bob Brown President of Harford County Maryland Right to Life and Larry Cirignano, DC representative to the Children’s First Foundation.
Once inside, small teams of pro-lifers quietly approached mothers scheduled for abortions s and offered them red roses as a symbol of life.
Thus the pro-life action is called the Red Rose Rescue. Attached to each rose was a card which stated: “God is love and he loves you and your unborn baby. Don’t be afraid. Your life circumstances will change and this baby will give you boundless joy… There is help for you and your baby.” The reverse of the card contained phone numbers of local pregnancy help centers.

The pro-lifers who entered the clinics talked to women scheduled for abortions, extending to them words of encouragement and offering material help. However in addition to reaching out to the mothers, the rescuers chose to remain in the clinics as an act of solidarity with the unborn children scheduled to be killed by abortionists.  The rescuers, like any others who recognize an urgent situation, responded to dire circumstances of imminent peril in a spirit of intervention on behalf of innocent babies and beleaguered mothers.
This is the second Red Rose Rescue to take place this year—the first occurred September 15th at the Northland Family Planning Center in Sterling Hts., MI and the Alexandria Reproductive Rights center in Alexandra, VA.  Those involved in the latter rescue, which included two Catholic priests, were tried in a Virginia court Nov. 20th.  Their attorney Christopher Kachouroff was permitted to present a “defense of others” in a bench trial, but defendants were convicted of trespass and received a “mere” $500 suspended fine. The trial for the Michigan pro-lifers is set for Feb. 14, 2018.  They are represented by Robert Muise of the American Freedom Law Center. No pro-lifers have been charged with the Federal law –Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act.
The Red Rose Rescue is modeled after the pro-life rescue activity of well-known Canadian activist Mary Wagner, who has repeatedly entered Toronto abortion centers and offered red roses to mothers waiting to have their children aborted.
During the Red Rose Rescue, when police officers arrived on the scene, pro-lifers attempted to continue conversation with women or sat on the floor praying quietly or singing hymns until they were placed under arrest.
Monica Migliorino Miller, director of Citizens for a Pro-Life Society who participated in the rescue at the Michigan clinic, explains: “The Red Rose Rescue is an act of charity for women who feel for whatever reason they must have their innocent unborn children killed. Those who took part were willing to embrace risks for these women and their babies. We will go into the very places where the unborn are put to death and extend help to the moms. Should this help be refused—we will not leave the abortion centers but remain in solidarity with the helpless victims oppressed by the injustice of abortion. Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta said that her work was “to go into the dark holes of the poor.”  The Red Rose Rescue is an action of going into the dark holes of the poor—namely abortion centers where the innocent are rejected—and in these dark holes we seek to bring hope, true peace and the presence of God.”
